Hooway for Wodney Wat -- Sam Hughes

Name: Sam Hughes
Title: Hooway For Wodney Wat
Author: Helen Lester and Lynn Munsinger
Age of reader: Preschool-Grade 2
Why you chose this book: I decided to choose this book because I believe it would be a valuable learning lesson for children. Also, I could see it appealing to students in my Pre-K class because there are students in my class who have trouble with parts of speech, just like the main character. It also teaches that playing games at school involves teamwork and getting along.

Plot summary: The story begins by introducing the main character, Rodney Rat. He is a rodent who cannot pronounce his “R’s”. All of his classmates keep making him say words that have “R’s” in them because they want to hear him talk funny. He gets sad because he doesn’t think he has any friends so he decides to sit by himself during lunch and recess. Then, a new student joins class named Camilla Cappybara who gives the students the impression that she is bigger and meaner. Then, she talks over them in class, making them think she is smarter too. She becomes the school bully. Wodney is afraid of how she will react when she hears him talk because he is picked to be the leader of the class’s favorite game, Simon Says. During the game, Camilla misunderstands Wodney and reacts differently than the other students when she plays. They all begin to laugh at her behavior. When Wodney says, “Go west” (meaning go rest), she starts to walk west and leaves. The class is proud of Wodney because he got her to stop being such a bother to them.
