Title: My Brother, Matthew
Author: Mary Thompson
Age of reader: 4-11
Summary: Matthew’s older brother, David, tells the story. David
shares all of the emotions that he feels while having a brother with a
disability. He often feels left out, frustrated, anxious, and aggravated. While sharing all of the struggles he has
gone through as a result of his brother, he also shares all of the positive
things that it has brought about. This book has a balanced outlook on what
children around children with special needs go through.
Why I chose this book: I chose this book because children can
relate to all of the negative feelings that Dillon is presenting. It shows the
children that it is okay to have these feelings, but also explains all of the
positive things to look for in the situation as well. Many children in my field
experience site have a difficult time understanding what is going on with the
children in the classroom who have special needs and do not understand why they
are treated differently. This book would help explain to them that their
feelings are warranted, however they need to look for the positives in the
situation as well.
