Book: Who says Women Can’t be Doctors?
Author: Tanya Lee Stone
Grade Level- K-5
Summary: In the 1830s,
Elizabeth Blackwell wanted to be a doctor, though the norm for women back then
was staying home to mother children. Through much opposition, Elizabeth became
the first woman doctor and inspired many with her story. This book shows the
trials and tribulations she faced, to get to where she wanted to be.
I chose this book because it
would jazz up a “career” lesson plan! It’s a different look into the life of a
doctor and shows girls they can become anything they want to be. It’s a fun
history lesson that most people, including myself, would probably never know
about otherwise. The story is very uprising and positive and would be a lot of
fun to read as a class. The illustrations are great!
