Title: Looking after Louis
Author: Lesley Ely
Age of Reader: 2nd –
5th Grade
Why you chose this book: This
book is about a boy with autism, and I think that autism is a difficult
disability for general education students to understand, and this is a good
book that supports interclassroom relationships and the students learn to join
Louis in his world, which promotes understanding and collaboration of children.
Plot Summary: A girl sits next
to a boy with autism, and she begins to wonder why the boy gets away with
certain things that other students can’t, why he mimics words, and why he
doesn’t talk to his classmates much. This girl also wonders why he is allowed
to go outside and play soccer while the rest of the kids can’t, and the concept
of fairness is introduced. In the story, students learn acceptance and love for
the boy in their class who may be a little different, but is still inherently a
child who loves to run and play.
