Title: Susan Laughs
Author: Jeanne Willis
Age of Readers: 4-7
Why you chose this book: I enjoyed
the book because of the simple language, making it easy and entertaining for
young children. It talks about all the things Susan can do, and then mentions
she has a wheelchair. I think it would be a great conversation starter for
parents or teachers wanting to talk about children with physical disabilities. It
points out that first and foremost Susan is a person.
Plot Summary: This book uses simple
sentences to describe all the things Susan does in a day. It talks about how
she likes to play, how she has good days, bad, days, she gets into trouble, and
sings. It is not until the very end of the book that the reader discovers Susan
has a wheelchair. The book shows children that Susan can do all sorts of things
and if the wheelchair is not seen or noticed, she is a typical young girl.
