It's OK to be Different -- Jordann Longnecker

It’s Okay to be Different
Todd Parr

This book focuses on simple ways children are different. It says “it’s okay to be missing a tooth” and “it’s okay to eat macaroni and cheese in the bathtub.” I like that this book has silly things that make children different because it will make it more enjoyable for the children listening to or reading it. Every child is different in important ways. This book shows little and big ways children are different. The reason I chose this book for special needs is because it talks about it being okay to have glasses, to be in a wheelchair, to need help from a seeing eye dog and to be proud of who you are. These are all types of needs children have and may not be happy with. This book takes fun and serious things and makes it easy to read. Young children in pre-school or Kindergarten will enjoy the bright colors and short, easy to follow sentences. The last page of this book is my favorite because it says, “It is okay to be different. You are special and significant just because of being who you are.” This simple quote will let anyone with any type of need know how wonderful they are. I also think this would be a great book to read in a family with someone who has special needs. This book will let everyone in the family know they have someone very important in their lives and that person will feel loved. Parr did a great job showing children how they are all unique in some different, but special way.
